Self and Community in the Metaverse is a course that examines the social dynamics and behaviors of individuals and communities within virtual environments. This class will explore the ways in which people create and maintain their online identities, as well as the ways in which these identities intersect and interact with the larger virtual communities in which they participate.

Through a combination of lectures, discussions, and hands-on activities, students will gain an understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities that arise in virtual environments, and learn how to effectively navigate and contribute to these communities. Key topics will include:

  • The construction and performance of online identities

  • The formation and maintenance of virtual communities

  • The impact of virtual environments on self and community

Students will have the opportunity to participate in various virtual environments, such as multiplayer games, virtual reality platforms, and online forums, to gain firsthand experience of the social dynamics at play. Through these activities, students will develop the skills necessary to communicate and collaborate effectively in virtual spaces, as well as the ability to critically analyze the social and cultural implications of the metaverse.
